چکیده

The reduplication in Kor. sālsal and sălɨlɨ ‘gently’ presents interesting phonological problems in 1) what should be the underlying base, *sal or salɨ? and 2) how the length alternation should be explained. In this paper I first present a serial analysis in which these examples are explained as cases of overand under-application, and then examine how it compares with a similar analysis in recent frameworks, e.g. the Correspondence Theory of McCarthy and Prince (1995), transderivational identity of Benua (1997) and the Stratal/ LPM-OT of Kiparsky (2000). The main conclusion drawn is that Wilbur’s (1973) Identity Constraint, which facilitates explanation of the reduplicative identity in languages but causes all kinds of problems for traditional rule ordering, can be better understood if we take into account the rule persistency and productivity, as envisioned by Chafe (1968) and Chen (1972).

The Full - to - Partial Reduction in Korean and Turkish Reduplication ·

Kim, Hyung-Soo. 2009. The Full-ta-Partial Reduction in Korean and Turkish Reduplication. Linguistic Research. 26(2), 121-148. Turkish and Korean share the morphological feature of having only suffixation in derivation. Partial reduplications, however, appear to contradict this typological generalization: partial prefixal reduplication has been claimed to exist in both languages, even though suc...

Foil Application to Reduce Resistance of Catamaran under High Speeds and Different Operating Conditions

Today, researchers exploit hybrid craft more than they used to be. The main reason is that they need to high speed as well as extra portability. For instance, a famous hybrid craft is named Hysucat, was designed through the combination of catamaran and hydrofoil. Catamarans, a type of multihull boats, have always considered by designers because of their simultaneous supply of high speed and sta...

A new look at partial reduplication in Korean

Kim, Hyung-Soo. 2003. A new look at partial reduplication in Korean. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 0.0. 00-000. An approach based on the phonological process of dissimilation turns out to do a better job of explaining the so-called asymmetry and delaryngealization in partial reduplication of ideophonic words in Korean than any of previous constraint-based analyses, including th...

Yield and nitrogen leaching in maize field under different nitrogen rates and partial root drying irrigation

Irrigation water is limiting for crop production in arid and semi-arid areas. Furthermore, excess nitrogen (N) application is a source of groundwater contamination. Partial root drying irrigation (PRD) can be used as water saving technique and a controlling measure of groundwater N contamination. The objectives of this investigation were to evaluate the effect of ordinary furrow irrigation (OFI...

Numerical Simulation of Partial Cavitation over Axisymmetric Bodies: VOF Method vs. Potential Flow Theory

A computational study of partial cavitation over axisymmetric bodies is presented using two numerical methods. The first method is based on the VOF technique where transient 2D Navier-Stokes equations are solved along with an equation to track the cavity interface. Next, the steady boundary element method (BEM) based on potential flow theory is presented. The results of the two methods for a di...
